Behind the Words: July - November
Part journal, part trivia, part self-initiated interview revealing (almost) all my secrets.
Welcome to the monthly share - where I give you a peek behind the last page, for whatever that's worth.

Poetry:
Sympathetic Fallacy
My husband and I watched a movie that was kind of disappointing, but through it I was introduced to the idea of a pathetic fallacy.
pa·thet·ic fal·la·cy
/pəˈTHedik ˈfaləsē/
noun
the attribution of human feelings and responses to inanimate things or animals, especially in art and literature.
I wanted to play with that in a poem, so I did and pulled a bit of biographical sentiment into the mix.
Dehisce
This poem went through several iterations, but you can see the basic bones of it in this blackout poetry that I was messing around with:
a bridge to the moon
Every weekday I wait with my kiddo at the bus stop. Most mornings we get to see the moon. I don’t remember my son’s exact comment, but it was something akin to “It looks like we could walk right up to the moon!” which got us talking and wondering. The rest is part truth, part fiction.
Dreamscapes:
You Are Here
Sometimes I write dreamscapes for particular people, for particular times in their lives. This was one such example.
Fiction:
Flowers of Antimony
Once upon a time, many, many years ago, I stumbled on a writing prompt. If memory serves, “Do you have any idea what you’ve done?” was the prompt, and I imagined it being spoken from one alchemist to another. The whole dang novella came out of that. As soon as I knew that it was the start of a conversation between alchemists, I dove into researching the art and pulling yet more inspiration from whatever I could find. Also, the bulk of the story was written in the months leading up to the 2016 election. I was experiencing rage in a way that I’d never experienced before. I can see now how that leaked into the story.
